Carson Valley Chukar Club Legacy Award Recipients
Honoring the legends of chukar hunting, one accolade at a time.
2025 – Dave Mauk
Minden native Dave Mauk was honored on March 1, 2025, at the club’s 39th annual fundraiser.
He received the Legacy Award for his lifelong dedication to chukar hunting and the community.
Dave was born in 1947 in the basement of the Minden Inn and later attended dental tech trade school in Portland before returning to the Valley to open his own business. He married Brenda in 1972, and her artwork raised $9,000 at the event’s auction. Dave volunteered over 20 years with Douglas County Engine Co., eventually becoming captain.
As the club’s first president, he helped build small-game guzzlers and was well known for his legendary tri-tip BBQ at club dinners.

2024 – Steve Erb & Phil McKinnon
At the 38th annual dinner on March 2, 2024,
Steve Erb and Phil McKinnon were each honored with the Legacy Award. Steve, born in Fallon in 1939,
was one of Nevada’s early chukar hunters. He mentored generations of hunters and played a huge role in club food prep and habitat projects. Phil,
a longtime teacher and principal, helped found the club and often took students on hunting trips, sparking new generations of mentors.
That dinner had over 450 attendees, despite a blizzard, and raised more than $130,000 for youth programs and wildlife conservation.

2023 – Dave Sharp
Dave Sharp received the second-ever Legacy Award on March 4, 2023,
at the club’s 37th annual dinner.
Dave moved to Yerington in 1950 and served in the Army before dedicating his life to serving his community,
his country, and the youth of Nevada.
His passion for wildlife and outdoor education has helped shape opportunities for countless young hunters and conservationists.
